It’s been quite a while since news broke that the Grown-ish star and Beyonce protégée Halle Bailey was cast to be Princess Ariel in the Little Mermaid Live movie remake and since then, the internet has gone gaga over the news.
Who is Halle Bailey?
Halle Bailey is one half of the music duo, Chloe x Halle. The duo was formed in 2015 comprising of Halle and her older sister Chloe. They made several song covers on youtube then were later discovered by Beyoncé, who signed them to her label, Parkwood Entertainment.
Why Disney cast Halle Bailey as The Little Mermaid Ariel
1. Halle has acted before
Halle has made appearances in television and several films since her childhood like “Let it Shine”, “House of Payne”, the disney comedy “Austin and Ally” etc. She even stars in popular tv series “Grownish”. With all the experience she has in the industry and considering how good of an actor she is, Disney probably wanted the best actor for the job.
2. Halle Bailey has a phenomenal voice
When you listen to ChloexHalle songs, you can’t help but notice how different Halle’s voice is. Halle’s voice has a unique tone to it, simply magical, like nothing you’ve ever heard before. Considering how enchanting the Little Mermaid soundtrack is, Halle Bailey’s voice will definitely charm all the viewers, a perfect fit to the tracks.
3. She has gorgeous features
Halle Bailey is an extremely gorgeous brown skin lady. Her dark beautiful eyes, perfect brown skin, nice long locked hair complements her perfectly, makes her stand out and definitely adds to her natural charm.
4. Halle Bailey’s hair is beautiful
There are not many black girls in mainstream media who wear locs. Halle is one of the few who do and they look absolutely stunning on her and give her unique style. Many black women get criticized for having locs. So seeing Halle rock her natural locs proudly every day is so pleasing and inspiring to watch.
5. She is young
Halle Bailey is so young. She is 19yrs old and an awesome appeal for the young generation.
6. The Little Mermaid is a fictional character
Given that the whole movie is based on fiction and Ariel is a “FISH WOMAN” whose race has 0 correlation with her story, If the original movie portrayed Ariel as a black fish woman, the story’s concept would not change. Unlike other princesses like Tiana, Moana whose stories are centered around their ethnic or cultural identities. The whole Little mermaid movie is centered around the fact that Ariel is a mermaid.
7. The Little mermaid’s hair is red
The Little Mermaid character has red hair but Halle doesn’t. Nevertheless, it’s not a strange thing for actors to dye their hair and change their normal looks for a movie. Halle will look stunning in red hair.
In this era of equality and diversity, Hollywood is making an effort to be more diverse. We can’t be mad at that. Representation is so important and it’s so important for all the little girls from all over the world of every race and color to feel represented, proud, and empowered.
9. Playing Ariel was Halle’s dream role:
Apparently, Halle wanted this role so bad that finally obtaining the role was a dream come true for her. She posted an image of a colored Ariel on her Instagram page ChloexHalle, and captioned it “ Dream come true”.
10. It was the least Disney could do for more black representation:
Disney created 49 films from 1937-2009 before delivering their first black princess with “Tiana and the Frog”. Black girls watched an entire catalog of Disney princess movies, never seeing themselves or a princess who looked like them for 70 years. Halle playing the role of princess Ariel now is just perfect as a different set of kids will get a chance to see someone who looks like them act the role of a princess on a popular Disney movie. Representation is very important for kids to build confidence.
Halle Bailey as The Little Mermaid
Halle Bailey is literally the most realistic portrayal of Ariel we could have had.
Here’s what the Director of the upcoming movie The Little Mermaid had to say of their decision:
“Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance – plus a glorious singing voice – all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role.”Rob Marshall, Director of The Little Mermaid Movie
Halle is truly phenomenal. Congrats Halle, you’re an inspiration.
